Malcolm Buchanan

NatWest | Regional Managing Director

Malcolm Buchanan is Chairman, North Regional Board and the bank’s Managing Director of Commercial Banking, North Region. Commercial Banking is responsible for serving the banking needs of c 19,000 SME and Corporate customers across the region including Commercial Real Estate. The North Regional Board brings together the bank’s Bank various customer and non-customer facing teams to collaborate closely on how the better serves customers and communities in the region.  Raised in Lanarkshire and educated at Braidhurst High School in Motherwell, Malcolm joined Clydesdale Bank in Glasgow in 1984 before moving to NatWest in 1998. Malcolm completed his Chartered Banker qualifications with the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland in 1987 and in 1998 completed an MBA (Dist) at Edinburgh Business School. Malcolm is a Certified Bank Director with The Institute of Banking, having completed the programme in 2019. Malcolm’s early career was in retail/branch banking and subsequently he has built up almost 25 years of experience in various corporate and commercial banking roles in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and London. Malcolm has led teams looking after small, medium and large companies as well as real estate investors/developers and financial institutions. Allied to customer facing experience, including leading customer facing teams, Malcolm has also led teams specialising in risk, balance sheet and debt product management. Malcolm was until recently Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Scotland Board and MD Commercial Banking, Scotland. He was formerly on the Boards of Scottish Financial Enterprise and Scottish Edge as well as Chairman of Business in the Community in Scotland.
